2024 New Years

Happy New Year to Our Community on ‘Our Earth’

Here’s wishing everyone health, wealth and happiness in 2024.

Put these dates in your diary to attend our 2024 event ‘Our Earth’:

  • 22nd March
  • 23rd March
  • 24th March

Now, how to get involved before then! We’re kicking off the new year with two competitions, both of which are free for those age 18 and under.

Firstly, we have our postcard competition for children and young people. This is a great way to introduce the topics of democracy, local government, environmental issues and community activism to your children. Take time to explore local environmental issues before you start this topic. Is there too much litter on your street? Do you want to encourage more hedgehogs or bees to your street? Are you worried about speeding cars causing a lot of air pollution in your neighbourhood? Perhaps you are worried about pollution in a nearby river or waterway? Or maybe you would like to ask your local MP why they are not doing more to encourage young people to cycle more.

You will also need to use the internet to find out your local councillor or MP’s postal address, as you’ll need to write this on the postcard.

Whatever issue you decide to draw and write about, create your design on a scrap piece of card, cut to postcard size and send it to us in an envelope, as detailed on our poster. We will display your postcard in the ‘Our Earth’ event at Highcross shopping centre in Leicester and the public will place a vote on the best ones. Small prizes donated by local businesses are on offer for the ones voted the best! Once the event is over, we will put your postcards in the letter box and they will get posted to your local MP or councillor.

Secondly, we have our second ever call for entries – the Our Earth International Open Call Exhibition. This is free for those age 18 and under, and costs £5 per entry (up to 3) for anyone over 18. We welcome entries from all young people and encourage you to have a go and submit your earth, climate and nature themed art work, whatever the medium. This year the exhibition will be presented virtually in a 3D, online gallery (accessed via web browser, from anywhere in the world) and digitally screened live at The Highcross Shopping Centre Our Earth event on 22nd. 23rd, 24th March 2024.

You can submit your artwork through the entry form here – just make sure you select the right form for you!

Finally, we have four exciting new workshops on offer between now and March, these are specifically designed for the children that are home educated. Check out the dates and descriptions on the poster below and sign up using the link here.
